Blinn baseball completes perfect 4-0 weekend

Buccaneers defeat Ranger, 3-2, and Howard 5-0

BRENHAM, Texas — Blinn College baseball (6-1) completed a perfect weekend at home by defeating Ranger College, 3-2, in extra innings, and Howard College, 5-0, Saturday at Leroy Dreyer Field.

The Buccaneers now maintain a perfect 4-0 record at home after also defeating Howard in two games on Friday.

Blinn came out on top of a pitching duel against Ranger to open the first game of the doubleheader with a 3-2 victory in the ninth inning.

Pitchers Jackson Leath, Henry Bird and Grayson Smith were instrumental in the Buccaneers’ win. Leath started the game for Blinn, throwing five innings and allowing four hits for one unearned run. Bird pitched in relief for three innings and surrendered just one run on two hits, while Smith pitched a hitless final inning.

Westley Schields and Brett Minninch led Blinn’s offense with two hits apiece, while Blake Faecher scored two of Blinn’s runs. Schields and McCalister each drove in one run.

Ranger was the first on the scoreboard with one run in the third inning. However, Blinn tied the game in the fifth inning after Jake Miller scored on a fielder’s choice.

A solo home run in the seventh inning, allowed Ranger to take a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning, but the Buccaneers tied the game in the bottom half to send it into extra innings. Faecher scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Faecher scored the winning run after heating things up in the ninth inning with a double and coming home on a single off the bat of Schields.

John Chomko and Brice Armistead collaborated on the mound to shutout Howard, 5-0, to conclude the day.

Chomko pitched six innings and only surrendered two hits, while striking out six. Armistead closed the game out in the seventh inning, allowing no hits and striking out two.

Faecher led Blinn’s offense with three RBIs, while Preston Hoffart followed with two. Minninch scored two runs in the game, while Schields, Alec Sanchez and Faecher each scored one.

Blinn landed on the board for the first time in the fourth inning after Hoffart drove in two runs with a single. Sanchez, who led off the inning with a single, and Minninch, who followed with a walk, came across the plate to give Blinn a 2-0 lead.

In one swing of the bat, Blinn led 5-0 in the fifth inning. Faecher hit a three-run homer for Blinn’s final runs of the game. Schields, who led off the inning with a single, and Minninch, who walked, each scored.

Blinn will host Navarro College on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.
