Caden Homniok leads Buccaneers to 9-5 win with three RBIs and two runs 

BEEVILLE, Texas — The Blinn College baseball team (8-3) split a doubleheader with Coastal Bend College 0n Tuesday.

Blinn lost its first game to Coastal Bend, 5-4, before bouncing back to defeat the Cougars, 9-5.

Coastal Bend 5 – Blinn 4

Westley Schields

Coastal Bend slipped past Blinn, 5-4, in the first game of the doubleheader.

Westley Schields led Blinn’s offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Russell scored two runs for the Buccaneers.

Patrick Hail started the game for the Buccaneers and surrendered two runs on one hit, while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.

Blinn took an early 2-0 lead after Jack Schell on a wild pitch in the first inning and Russell scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.

Coastal Bend evened the score in the second inning and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning.

The Buccaneers took back a 4-3 advantage in the sixth inning when Schields hit a two-run single for Russell and Dalton Stevenson, who drew walks earlier in the inning, to score.

However, the Cougars rallied back for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead for good.

Blinn 9 – Coastal Bend 5

Blinn bounced back to defeat Coastal Bend, 9-5, to end the doubleheader on a high note.

Caden Homniok led Blinn’s offense with three RBIs and two runs, while Ben Hovda went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs. Preston Hoffart and Russell each scored two runs in the win.

Mason Muras earned the win on the mound after pitching 3 1/3 innings and giving up two earned runs and six hits.

Blinn scored its first two runs in the opening inning when Schields hit a solo home run and Homniok walked the bases loaded. The Buccaneers added one run in the third inning when Russell scored on Hovda’s single for a 3-0 lead.

Coastal Bend gained on Blinn with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but Blinn broke away with a 7-2 lead by scoring four runs in the fourth inning. Brett Minnich kicked things off with a one-run double, while Russell knocked in two runs with a single. Hovda scored Blinn’s final run of the inning with a double.

The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to close in on Blinn, 7-4.

Blinn’s offense kept things rolling, tacking on one run in the sixth inning when Homniok scored on Matt Crossley’s sacrifice fly, and scored its final run in the seventh inning when Minnich scored on an error for the Buccaneers to lead, 9-5.

Coastal Bend rallied for its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to Blinn.

Next, Blinn will host Alvin Community College on Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.
