BUC SOFTBALL GOES 2-1 AT COWTOWN CLASSIC

The Buccaneers pick up wins against No. 4 Des Moines, 13-12, and No. 11 Johnson County, 8-4

FORT WORTH, Texas — Blinn College softball won two out of three games to open the Cowtown Classic Friday.

Blinn opened the tournament with a 10-5 loss to No. 4 Butler Community College before bouncing back with wins over No. 4 (Div. II) Des Moines Area Community College, 13-12, and No. 11 (Div. II) Johnson County Community College, 8-4, in the eighth inning.

Butler 10 – Blinn 5

Butler rallied back in the final inning to defeat Blinn, 10-5, to open the tournament.

Kimber Cortemelia went 2-for-3 to lead Blinn’s offense. Cortemelia and Anna Pisaro each scored two runs, while Tori Alvarez-Lopez, Courtney Ogle, Bailey Zibelin, Mackenzie Crews and Pisaro each drove in one run.

Blinn was the first on the board after Butler made three errors in the second inning, allowing Cortemelia and Pisaro to score.

The Buccaneers held a 2-0 lead until the fifth inning when Butler pulled ahead 3-2 after scoring a solo run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning. The Grizzlies built their lead to 4-2 after adding a run in the sixth inning.

Blinn’s offense manufactured three runs in the sixth inning to take back a 5-4 lead. Pisaro, Crews and Alvarez-Lopez strung together one-run singles in the inning for Amber Langston, Cortemelia and Pisaro to score.

Howard produced six runs in the seventh inning to rally back for the win.

Blinn 13 - Des Moines 12

An eleven-run fifth inning allowed the Buccaneers to rally back for a 13-12 win over Des Moines for their first win of the day.

Langston led Blinn’s explosive offense with three hits for four RBIs, while scoring three runs. Maria Garcia and Ogle each drove in two runs apiece.

Blinn opened the game with a 1-0 lead after Alvarez-Lopez scored on a groundout, but Des Moines evened the score at the bottom of the first inning.

Des Moines scored two runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning to take off with a 7-1 lead.

Blinn scored its next run in the fourth inning when Garcia hit a one-run double, but Des Moines answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to hold onto a significant 9-2 advantage.

Blinn used an explosive offense to rally back in the fifth inning with 11 runs on 11 hits for the Buccaneers to take a 13-9 lead for good. Four straight singles allowed Kelsey Lowke and Alvarez-Lopez to score the first two runs in the inning. Three straight singles off the bats of Garcia, Pisaro and Crews, and a double by Ogle, allowed Blinn to even the score 9-9. Ogle scored Blinn’s 10th run on a groundout, while Langston and Cortemelia batted in the Buccaneers’ final two runs.

Des Moines scored its final three runs in the fifth inning.

Blinn 8 – Johnson County 4

The Buccaneers rallied in extra innings for four runs to defeat Johnson County, 8-4, in the eighth inning.

Cortemelia and Garcia led the offense with three hits apiece, while combining for five runs and three RBIs, while Pisaro went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs.

Blinn was the first on the board in the second inning when Garcia scored on a fielder’s choice.

Johnson County evened the score 1-1 in the fourth inning and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning.

The Buccaneers scored three runs in the sixth inning to immediately take back a 4-3 lead. Langston sparked the offense with a triple, followed by Cortemelia hitting a one-run single and Garcia hitting a one-run triple to even the score. Garcia scored on a groundout to pull Blinn ahead by one run.

Johnson County leveled the score 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning and a scoreless seventh inning by both teams pushed the game into extra innings.

Blinn scored four runs in the eighth inning to ensure the win. Cortemelia, Pisaro and Julissa Llanos all produced one-run singles, while Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Crews.

The Buccaneers begin the final day of the tournament against Fort Scott Community College at 9 a.m. and conclude it against Midland College at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
