McLennan dishes Blinn softball first loss, 13-11

CONROE, Texas — McLennan Community College rallied back in the seventh inning to dish Blinn College softball its first loss of the season, 13-11, Friday afternoon at the 2019 San Jacinto Round Robin.

Later, the Buccaneers fell to Team Japan, 6-0. With the pair of losses, Blinn’s record drops to 5-2.

McLennan 13 – Blinn 11

Blinn opened the tournament with a loss to McLennan Community College, 13-11, despite tallying 10 hits.

Amber Langston was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3, and driving in four runs, while scoring one. Kimber Cortemelia went 3-for-4 to help lead Blinn’s offense, scoring two runs and driving in one, while Tori Alvarez-Lopez drove in two runs and scored two runs.

Blinn scored its first two runs in the first and second innings for an early lead. Alvarez-Lopez scored the Buccaneers first run with a solo home run, while Langston hit a single for Bailey Zibelin to score Blinn’s second run.

After McLennan scored one run in the top of the fourth inning, Blinn’s offense exploded for six runs in the bottom half. The Buccaneers loaded the bases to start the inning followed by Langston, Mayela Fernandez and Alvarez-Lopez each drawing walks to score three runs. An error allowed Langston to score, while Alvarez-Lopez came home on a double play for Blinn to lead 8-1.

McLennan scored four runs in the fifth inning to chip away at Blinn’s lead, but the Buccaneers answered back with two runs that Langston drove in with a triple to lead 10-5.

The Highlassies evened the score 10-10 with five runs in the sixth inning. However, Cortemelia hit a solo shot over the fence for Blinn to take back an 11-10 lead in the sixth inning.

Although the Buccaneers led by one run heading into the final inning, the Highlassies rallied back for three runs to down Blinn.

Japan 6 – Blinn 0

Blinn was unable to get any runs on the board in its final game of the day as Team Japan earned a 6-0 victory.

Blinn’s offense managed three hits in the game. Langston totaled two hits, while Alvarez-Lopez followed with one.

Japan scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning to lead 4-0. Japan scored its final two runs in the fourth inning.

Alysa Torres took the loss in the circle after surrendering four runs on four hits in two innings. Meghan Morris jumped in to throw three innings and allowed three hits and two unearned runs, while Ashley Richardson tossed one no-hit inning.

The Buccaneers will conclude the 2019 San Jacinto Round Robin with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9. Blinn will face Ranger College at 10 a.m. and No. 1 Temple College at 12:15 p.m.
