BUC WOMEN WIN/MEN FALL IN OT

BUCCANEER WOMEN

Buccaneers ride Adams’ 29 points to victory

Blinn rebounds vs. Temple with 79-57 win

On the day she was named the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, Blinn sophomore Fatima Adams turned in another dominant performance.

Adams, a sophomore from Rudder High School, scored 29 points and led the Buccaneers past Temple College 79-57 here at the Blinn P.E. Building Wednesday night.

“She’s as good of a player as I’ve had offensively,” Blinn (11-2) coach Jeff Jenkins said. “She can score in so many different ways: in the low post, in transition, off an offensive rebound, a jump shot, a 3-pointer. She’s dangerous.”

The Bucs are turning out to be quite dangerous, too.

The winners of nine straight games, Blinn avenged an earlier loss to Temple, 81-61, on the road Nov. 12.

“It was nice to get them at home,” Jenkins said. “They beat us by 20 at their place and it was one of our worst losses in awhile. But we’ve improved quite a bit since then.”

Tierra Tucker, Katrina Hayden, Shunta Nevitt and Brianna Luton each scored nine points in the victory. Of the 10 players who played, nine scored.

“As a coach, you’d like to have a set rotation of players, but these girls haven’t separated from each other,” Jenkins said. “They’re all playing well right now.”

While the winning streak has been because of all-around team performances, Adams has led the charge.

During a three-game stretch Dec. 2-8, Adams averaged 30 points per game and 12.6 rebounds en route to her first player of the week honor. On the season, she’s averaging 23.1 points per game and 12.6 rebounds.

“She had a special week last week,” Jenkins said. “This is a big honor for her.”

Her biggest improvement from her freshman campaign, Jenkins said, has been her ability to score in transition.

“Teams are going to slow her down, but she’s tough to stop,” he said.

For the past nine games, slowing down the Bucs has proved equally as difficult.

BUCCANEER MEN

No. 3-ranked Kilgore tops Buccaneers in OT

Rangers outscore Blinn 14-9 in extra period

For 40 minutes, the Blinn men’s basketball team held its own against the third-ranked Kilgore Rangers.

But in a five-minute overtime period, the Rangers pulled away and escaped the Blinn P.E. Building with an 88-83 Region XIV Conference victory.

“Give credit to Kilgore, they’re a very good ballclub,” Blinn (8-4, 0-3 Region XIV) coach Scott Schumacher said. “They’re very deserving of their national ranking.”

Blinn led the Rangers at halftime, 36-35, thanks to a shot from beyond half-court by sophomore Jourdan Stickler, who finished the game with 16 points. Kilgore, though, came out and quickly regained the lead to start the second half. Blinn had to fight back the entire half and tied the game at 74 with 12 seconds remaining.

The Rangers missed two shots underneath the basket at the end of regulation.

Kilgore went on to outscore the Bucs 14-9 in the extra period.

Blinn’s Macari Brooks and Jalan McCloud each scored 16 points, and Cornell Barnett scored 12.

“I thought our guys were committed and stuck through the adversity,” Schumacher said. “They executed what we asked them to execute and it was a good game for them physically and mentally. We had a chance to win, it just didn’t happen tonight.”

Stephan Moody, an Ole Miss commit, scored a game-high 34 points for Kilgore, and Jamarcus Weatherspoon scored 25 points, 23 of which came in the second half.

The game marks the Bucs’ last until Dec. 31 when they host Lone Star College–Cy Fair at 4 p.m. in the P.E. Building.
