The Blinn College baseball team’s strong start to the season isn’t going unnoticed.

At 10-5, a record that includes victories over Texas’ top programs, the Buccaneers made a jump into the NJCAA national rankings to No. 14 on Tuesday. The team was unranked in the NJCAA preseason poll.

“It just goes to show what kind of start we’ve had,” coach Harvey McIntyre said. “We’ve played a lot of quality opponents so far and we haven’t had an easy schedule.”

Those victories include a 2-1 defeat of fifth-ranked Navarro College in which sophomore pitcher Robbie Dickey struck out 15 batters, and a series win over Weatherford College, a team McIntyre said has some of the best pitchers in the state.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Bucs as they open a four-game Region XIV Conference series against 12th-ranked Alvin Community College on Thursday. The teams play a noon doubleheader Thursday in Alvin before heading to Brenham for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday to close out the series. Alvin is the only other Region XIV team ranked in the poll.

The last time the Bucs were ranked in the poll was 2011, when they climbed as high as No. 9.

“This is great for our kids and great for our program, but we still have 13 spots to go,” McIntyre said.
