Balanced Buccaneers roll past Coastal Bend, 95-45
BRENHAM, Texas – Having 13 players score in a game is rare for a basketball team but the Blinn College women have that balance and used it to blowout visiting Coastal Bend College 95-45 Feb. 4 in the P.E. Building in Brenham.
“It is good in this region to get a game like this because we really have 14 good players on this team,” said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins. “We only get to play eight or nine players most games but it was nice to see Alissa Johnson, Jonnelle Jackson and Jeliah Preston show that they are good players too because they show it in practice.”
Katelynn Johnson led the balanced attack with an impressive first half of 12 points and finished the game with 15 points.
“I felt good out there and I just felt good all day today,” Johnson said after the game. “I wasn’t overthinking too much out there.”
Blinn grabbed control of the game early on as Faumui hit a shot in the low post to give the Buccaneers a 19-6 lead with 14:23 left in the first. Coastal Bend had a couple small spurts in the opening half but with Johnson nailing 3-pointers and scoring 12 points and Freeman getting to the basket and scoring 11 points in the half the Buccaneers held a commanding 57-26 lead at the break.
The balance really showed for Blinn in the second half as 12 girls scored in the final 20 minutes. Luton led the Buccaneers with eight points in the closing half. Blinn was able to score the final 19 points in the game to roll to the 50-point victory.
Blinn will hit the road to face Jacksonville College Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.
