Buccaneers survive late barrage to down Lone Star – Cy-Fair, 84-76

Blinn led by as much as 30 points in second half and nearly let lead slip away

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College looked poised to cruise to an easy victory as the Buccaneers led by as much as 30 in the second half but were lucky to survive a barrage of points by Lone Star College – Cy-Fair to win 84-76 Thursday night inside the P.E. Building.
Blinn improved to 2-0 on the season with the help of 21 points coming from LaKendric Hyson.
“The second game was a lot better for us and we just have to play hard the entire game,” Hyson said. “Everything for us starts with the defense and if we do well defensively then it will set up the offense.”
Juwan Green pitched in 14 points while Tyler Barlow had 12 and Curtlon Wesley finished with nine points.
The start was a little sluggish for Blinn as Cy-Fair lead 8-3 early on but the Buccaneers followed with a 27-6 run to take a 30-16 lead. Barlow put in 10 of his 12 total points in the first half while Hyson paced Blinn with 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Barlow hit two free throws before halftime to give the Buccaneers a 48-24 lead at the break.
Blinn kept the momentum going in the second half, at least in the first seven minutes. The Buccaneers stretched the lead out to 63-33 after an alley-oop dunk by Tyrus Grayson. Hyson led Blinn with 10 points in the second half while Green and James Harrison each scored six in the final 20 minutes.
After leading by as much as 30 points, Blinn took its foot off the gas pedal and Cy-Fair took advantage. Hitting free throws and 3-point shots down the stretch, Cy-Fair got the game within eight points in the final minute but couldn’t any closer as the Buccaneers were able to hold on for the eight-point victory.
Blinn will have another home game on Tuesday, Nov. 8 against Houston Community College at 7:30 p.m.
