The Blinn women’s basketball team turned up its defensive intensity Saturday and picked up its first win of the new year.

Behind 19 points from sophomore Fatima Adams, the Buccaneers defeated the Panola Fillies 102-54 at the Blinn P.E. Building.

“I thought we responded really well from our loss Wednesday to Trinity Valley,” Blinn (13-3, 3-1 Region XIV) coach Jeff Jenkins said.

The Bucs suffered their worst loss of the season to the Lady Cardinals, 105-70, in a game in which the defense struggled.

Such wasn’t the case Saturday.

Blinn played more aggressive defensively, which forced Panola into missed shots, and the fast-paced offense put the game away. All 11 players scored, and five reached double digits.

In her second game back, sophomore Amari Jones, who missed the first half of the season with a torn meniscus, scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers.

“She’s a 5-11 athlete who can play a couple different positions for us,” Jenkins said. “The more she plays the more comfortable she’s going to get.”

As a freshman, Jones averaged six points and four rebounds per game as the Bucs qualified for the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship for the second time in the program’s history.

Katrina Hayden scored 16 points Saturday, Shunta Nevitt dropped 14 and Tayler Weiks scored 11. Tierra Tucker, an A&M Consolidated graduate, scored nine.
