BUCS ROLL TO THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Starters fuel huge second half for Buccaneers in win over LSC-Tomball, 110-70

The Blinn College starters turned it up in the second half and turned what was a somewhat close game into a blowout victory. After only by 10 points at the half, the Buccaneers picked up the tempo in the second half and ran away with a 110-70 victory over Lone Star College-Tomball Nov. 6.

Lionheart Leslie was a big reason for the better play in the second half as he helped to push the ball against LSC-Tomball and ended the game picking up 20 points to lead the Buccaneers.

“Coach told us to pick up the intensity and then give it to the big men,” Leslie said. “Once we got the ball moving then we got the big lead.”

Leslie wasn’t the only one in double figures for Blinn as Revey Norton scored 16 and Ja’Cardo Hawkins and Cody Everitt each scored 15. Trey Edwards finished with 12 points, Vicktor Arnick had 11 and Morris Dunnigan earned 10 points in the win.

Blinn started out the game by taking advantage of its size advantage and dishing out a helping of Hawkins to LSC-Tomball as he scored nine quick points to give Blinn a 15-6 lead early on. That lead stayed large with 6:27 left in the half as Arnick cut to the basket for a layup to give the Buccaneers a 37-20 lead.

Leslie poured in 12 points in the first half while Everitt also scored 12 points as he found lanes to the basket on numerous occasions for Blinn. Unfortunately for the Buccaneers, LSC-Tomball turned up the defensive pressure and made the game a little closer with a number of the reserve players for Blinn on the court.

LSC-Tomball scored the final six points of the half, including a 3-pointer from Rodnell Desir to only trail Blinn by 10 with the score 51-41 at the break.

“They (LSC-Tomball) ran more of a spread offense to try and control the game,” said Blinn head coach Scott Schumacher.

The sluggish end to the first half didn’t linger in the minds of the Blinn starters. With the energy necessary, the Buccaneers came out scoring the first 14 points in the second half. Leslie and Edwards each hit a couple of baskets to boost the Blinn lead to 65-41 with 16:57 left.

Blinn keep the offensive pressure throughout the second half, even after the starters took a seat on the bench and the reserves took over. The starters set the offensive and defensive example and Blinn took control of the game.

Norton was another source of energy for Blinn as he scored 12 points in the final 20 minutes to help close out the 40-point victory.

Blinn will travel to face Weatherford College on Nov. 11 at 7:30 p.m. for its next game.
