BUCS SPLIT TWINBILL AT LAMAR STATE

Buccaneer offense climbs out of rut with 7-2 victory

PORT ARTHUR, Texas – The Blinn softball team’s offense was stuck in a major rut.

The Buccaneers had managed one run in their previous 19 innings and were coming off a 2-1 eight-inning loss to Lamar State-Port Arthur in the opener of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

That rut finally came to an end in Game 2 when Taylor Guidry hit a two-run single in the first inning and the Bucs pounded out seven runs to beat the Seahawks 7-2 in Game 2.

“Our offense has been sputtering the past few games and fortunately we got some runs in Game 2,” Blinn (21-9, 4-4) coach Rick Church said.

Starting pitchers Mariah Gibson and Jaiden Rawls each turned in strong performances. Gibson in Game 1 tossed eight innings, struck out 10 and allowed two runs in the loss.

In Game 2, Rawls tossed seven innings of five-hit ball while allowing one earned run.

“The past four games our pitching has been where we need it to be,” Church said. “On offense we need to find some grit and competitiveness and start scoring some runs.”

Blinn finally managed to do that in Game 2 as the offense crossed all seven runs in the first two innings.

Following Guidry’s two-run single, Allie Piro hit a two-run single of her own that scored Rawls and Guidry to give the Bucs a quick 4-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Blinn crossed three runs on RBI hits from Peyton Webb and Rawls and a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Sydney Wellmann.

Webb and Rawls were each 2-for-3 with an RBI, and freshman Carley Latta was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Bucs’ doubleheader at Angelina on Wednesday has been postponed due to the threat of afternoon showers. The teams will instead meet April 14 for a 2 p.m. showdown.

Blinn returns to the field Saturday against Coastal Bend at Hohlt Park for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. The Bucs will host Adams Angels Night to support Adam’s Angels Ministry, a local non-profit organization founded by Donna and Tim Culliver of Brenham as a way to reach out to families that have been affected by childhood cancer.

The Cullivers lost their 4-year-old son, Adam Christian Culliver, to acute myelogenous leukemia. Proceeds from the game will be donated to Adam’s Angels.
