Blinn College baseball’s pitching staff dominates in 1-0 shutout in opener

Millender, Armistead and Smith two-hit Alvin for the Bucs to take the series

ALVIN, Texas  Blinn College baseball’s trio of pitchers in Jacob Millender, Brice Armistead and Grayson Smith worked together to shutout Alvin Community College for a 1-0 win in the eighth inning to open Monday’s doubleheader.

In the doubleheader finale, Alvin slipped past Blinn, 4-3.

With the split, Blinn moves to 23-15 overall and 16-11 in Region XIV play.

The Buccaneers came out on top of a pitching duel in extra-innings to defeat Alvin 1-0 in the doubleheader opener.

Millender, Armistead and Smith surrendered just two hits as a pitching staff to shutout Alvin. Smith recorded the win after pitching the final 2 1/3 innings and striking out three.

Alec Sanchez and Cameron Gibbons led the offense with two hits apiece.

Sanchez drove in the only run of the game in the eighth inning. Preston Hoffart led off the inning with an error and advanced into scoring position on Westley Schield’s sacrifice bunt. Sanchez followed with a single for Hoffart to score the winning run.

Alvin 4 – Blinn 3

Alvin managed its first win in the four-game series by defeating the Buccaneers, 4-3.

Blinn’s offense was limited to three hits, but Sanchez, Hoffart and Reggie McCalister were able to each knock in one run.

Blinn was on the board first when Sanchez scored on a fielder’s choice in the opening inning.

The Buccaneers extended their lead to 2-0 when Sanchez doubled for Schields to score in the second inning.

Alvin evened the score 2-2 in the third inning and added another two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Blinn rallied for one run in the sixth inning when Blake Faecher tagged up on a line out, but fell just short of a comeback.

Next, Blinn returns home to take on TCS Post Grad Academy in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17, starting at 2 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.
