Cortemelia’s double lifts Blinn softball to extra-inning win over San Jacinto, 4-3

Buccaneers claim sweep to increase conference record to 14-0

HOUSTON, Texas Kimber Cortemelia’s double drove in the winning run for Blinn College softball (31-12, 14-0) to defeat San Jacinto College-South, 4-3, in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s doubleheader opener.

The Buccaneers went on to sweep San Jacinto by claiming a 7-2 victory in the second game of the day.

Blinn 4 – San Jacinto 3

The Buccaneers picked up their 13th conference win of the season in an extra-inning thriller as they defeated San Jacinto, 4-3, in eight innings.

Cortemelia and Amber Langston led Blinn’s offense with three hits apiece as Cortemelia drove in two runs and Langston scored two runs. Sarah Cedillo also scored two runs, while Anna Pisaro and Maria Garcia each drove in one run.

Meghan Morris recorded the win after tossing all eight innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits, while striking out three.

Blinn took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Cedillo scored on Cortemelia’s single and Langston scored on Pisaro’s sacrifice fly.  The Buccaneers increased their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning as Garcia singled for Cedillo to score.

San Jacinto scored its only three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to even the score and push the game into extra innings.

The Buccaneers rallied for one run in the top of the eighth with two outs. Langston sparked the offense with a single and Cortemelia followed with a double for her to score.

Blinn held off San Jacinto in the bottom half of the inning to capture the win.

Blinn’s offense rallied in late innings to defeat San Jacinto 7-2 in the doubleheader finale for the sweep.

Alysa Torres claimed the win in the circle after coming in for the final 2 1/3 innings and not allowing a run. Ashley Richardson was strong in her start for Blinn, only giving up two runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Langston recorded three RBIs, while Cedillo scored two runs to lead Blinn’s offense.

San Jacinto was on the board first for a 1-0 lead in the second inning and it wasn’t until the fifth inning that Blinn scored to tie the game. Pisaro scored the Buccaneers first run on a wild pitch to level the score 1-1.

San Jacinto immediately took back a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Blinn hurried to even the score back 2-2 in the sixth inning when Cedillo scored on Cortemelia’s single.

In the seventh inning Blinn ran away with the game by scoring five runs. Tori Alvarez-Lopez and Cedillo hit back-to-back singles for Mackenzi Crews and Mayela Fernandez to score. Langston followed with a three-run homer to unload the bases and give the Buccaneers a 7-2 cushion.

Torres closed out the game in the circle for Blinn to claim the five-run victory.

Next, the Buccaneers look to remain undefeated in Region XIV play as they take on Laredo Community College in a doubleheader on Friday, April 12, starting at 1 p.m. on the road.
