BURTON CITY COUNCIL PUTTING EMPHASIS ON ROAD REPAIRS

The Burton City Council is looking to move forward with road repairs across the city.

Mayor David Zajicek announced at the city council’s meeting Tuesday he met last week with Precinct 4 Washington County Commissioner Joy Fuchs, regarding some of the city’s issues with roads, ditches, potholes and drainage. He said he plans to meet again soon with Fuchs, along with Washington County Road and Bridge Engineer Ross McCall.

Zajicek said the city’s main focus is on the corner of Texas and Railroad Streets, which the council approved repairs for in April. Other repairs he said were of importance were Railroad Street near the school, Burton Street, San Marcos Street, the ditch on South Main Street, and the ditch on Live Oak Street between North Main Street and Brazos Street.

Also in session, the council tabled action on a contract between the city and Jason Jaster for maintenance on city property, including mowing and edging at City Hall, the water well, water tower, and Weeren Park.

City councilmember Jerry Martin said, while the city is lucky to have residents that help take care of the town, there are several areas that could use some attention. He mentioned a ditch near the post office that has long been overgrown and has standing water and debris.  He said this is a high-traffic area, “caddie corner from the park”, yet to his knowledge has never been mowed or weed-eaten.

Martin added there have been citizens that have brought up this area to him, along with others, and he stressed the need to have them addressed by someone. City Secretary Angela Harrington replied the council will need to get together and gather a complete list of those locations.  Martin said there’s not a whole lot of city property that’s not taken care of, but there’s probably ten percent of property that “falls through the cracks”.

Harrington said the city will have to decide on adding new responsibilities for the current maintenance worker, or going out for bids for work on those properties and other ones to be added.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved the appointment of Nathan Kalkhake as Sargent-at-Arms.
