BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS ADOPTION OF UNCHANGED TAX RATE

The Burton City Council will meet Tuesday to consider adoption of the property tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year.

The city’s proposed rate is 50 cents per $100 valuation, unchanged from 2019.  The rate would consist of 10 cents for maintenance and operations and 40 cents for debt service, the same as last year.  Following adoption, the council is looking to set a public hearing on the rate for September 8th at 5:30 p.m.

The council will also once again revisit the lawn maintenance ordinance agenda item.  The ordinance pertains to the regulating of weeds and uncut grasses, and provides for enforcement measures.  City Secretary Angela Harrington said the council feels, after several months of discussion and revisions, that a new yard maintenance ordinance is ready for formal approval.

Also in session Tuesday, the council will look to pass an ordinance to abandon and convey the alleyway running through property owned by Hilton Thompson and Fritz Steenken between North Colorado Street and Trinity Street, north of East Cedar Street and South of Pecan Street.  The two property owners are looking to purchase the alleyway running through their respective properties.

The council will also consider:

  • Approval of a variance for a new mobile home at 306 South Main Street. According to Harrington, the location previously had a mobile home on the property, and water and sewer hookups are already present.
  • Approving a Derksen building structure (756 square foot cabin/house) to be placed at 800 North Main Street by Susie Tommaney. The structure meets the minimum square footage required in city ordinances, but a prior variance was denied last month.
  • Approving the Washington County Appraisal District budget for 2020-21 as approved by the Appraisal District Board on July 28th.

The council will meet Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 p.m.  Due to lack of space at Burton City Hall, the meeting is open to the public by conference call only.  To access the meeting, use the dial-in information available below.
