BURTON TRUSTEES SET HEARING DATE FOR BUDGET, TAX RATE

The Burton School Board scheduled a public meeting date for discussion of the tax rate and budget at Monday night’s meeting.

After no action from the budget workshop or executive session, trustees approved publishing the tax rate of $1.17 per $100 valuation.  The rate includes $1.04 for maintenance and operations and 13 cents for debt services.  The meeting to adopt the rate and budget is set for Monday, August 27th at 6:30 p.m.

Washington County Chief Appraiser Willy Dilworth presented the county’s appraisal district budget to the board at the meeting. Dilworth talked about the district’s surplus and said it would be distributed to its 2020 pictometry flight.  He noted that pictometry services, used for appraisals, are performed every three years.  The board also granted the district’s request to move funds set aside for fleet replacement, for a computer backup system.

During her report, Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy introduced several training initiatives for school administrators and staff, including crisis prevention and intervention, bullying and drug impairment awareness.  In addition, she briefly mentioned that a request has been made to lease school district property for mineral rights.  She said more information would be presented at future board meetings.

The board also heard reports from the athletic director and principals, agreed on policies to implement a school safety guardian plan, approved the teacher appraisal calendar, and tabled discussion of staff salaries.  They also scheduled a budget workshop for Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the administration office.
