CHANGES IN VEHICLE INSPECTION STICKER RULES BEGIN ON SUNDAY

The State of Texas is implementing a Two Steps One Sticker program for vehicles and is informing Texas drivers of the new law.

Beginning Sunday, March 1st, the state will stop issuing vehicle inspection stickers. At this point, in order to register your vehicle, you will be required to pass a vehicle inspection not more than 90 days prior to the date your registration expires.

After passing an inspection, the inspection station will update your electronic inspection record with the results and will issue a paper vehicle inspection report.

When you go to register your vehicle, your inspection will be verified electronically, and if all is in order, the registration will move forward.

For more information on the program, go the TXDMV website at www.txdmv.gov and select “Two Steps One Sticker” under the Motorist tab.

  1. So as I understand it, if my registration runs out in May, and my inspection runs out in July, I renew my registration in May. My inspection will still be in force, and I will not need to renew it until February of next year, correct?

  2. This makes no sense! We will still need an inspection annually? And if so we will be issued a paper report?

    1. You will still need an inspection annually; however, with the new changes you may actually run over one calendar year with this new system. You will get your inspection and the info will go into a computer system which will be checked when you go to get your registration updated at your local county clerk’s office. You will not receive a paper copy or sticker for an inspection sticker anymore, just probably a receipt for payment.

    1. If your registration is not due yet, you will do nothing. When your registration is due again, you will just make sure to get your car inspected within 90 days before going to renew your registration. Say if your registration goes out in December of this year, you will not get your inspection done any sooner than September. Basically all inspection stickers will be null and void after March 1st. (This should mean that you can remove them from your windshield and officers should know not to stop and ticket you for an invalid inspection sticker.) Yes, this means that your car may not be inspected for over a year, but that is what will be happening to many as the system coordinates inspections with registrations.
