Phelps says that while Part 1 crimes have seen a dramatic decrease over the past few years, the number of motor vehicle burglaries has spiked in just the last few weeks.

Chief Phelps and his staff have put together a proactive strategy he believes will help apprehend suspects and prevent more crimes.

A big part of that, according to Phelps, is getting the community to help out…

One of the most sought-after items in these burglaries are guns.  Phelps says when weapons are stolen the problem is drastically magnified…

Phelps says his officers have already made several arrests in relation to some of the burglaries, and he expects more in the near future.

  1. It is good to see the chief addressing this problem, however arresting the criminals is not enough. The prosecution must insist on very stiff sentences for crimes like this, it is the only way to reduce them. Enough of the easy plea bargins, let them, serve some hard time.

    1. Part of the problem is Texas Law views Burglary of a Motor Vehicle as a Misdemeanor. Most they can get is a year in County Jail. No matter how many times it is committed.

If you break into a business the most you can get is two years in prison. Neither one of these crimes is seen as very serious by the legislature.
