CITY COUNCIL APPROVES TAX PHASE-IN AND MORE SENIOR HOUSING

The Brenham City Council has approved another tax phase-in agreement that could mean an additional 100 jobs for the city.

At their meeting Thursday the council approved a request by Tempur-Sealy for an expansion to their operation in Brenham.

According to City Manager Terry Roberts, the Economic Development Foundation has convinced Tempur-Sealy to locate its expansion project to the Brenham plant.

The company has plans to invest a half-million dollars to purchase additional machinery and equipment as well as add a total of 104 new jobs.

Currently Tempur-Sealy employs 160 workers.

Also at Thursday's meeting, the council took a big step toward more housing for the elderly.

Council members approved a special use permit for a senior housing apartment complex northeast of downtown near the Brenham Clinic.

City staffers told the council that they believe the retirement community is compatible with the neighborhood and would provide orderly growth.

City officials also say the development—to be constructed by HuntJon Development, would be ideal for seniors due to its proximity to medical offices, a grocery store and downtown Brenham.
