CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER PARKING LOT PAVING THURSDAY

The cost to pave a parking lot at the All Sports Building at Brenham’s Hohlt Park is more than twice the amount originally budgeted.

Brenham Public Works Director Dan Rau is requesting approval to spend over $106,000 to pave the parking lot of the All Sports Building, more than twice the original $45,000 estimated cost.  Rau says $15,000 has already been spent on engineering costs for the project.  During this Thursday’s regular meeting of the Brenham City Council, Rau will recommend accepting the low bid of just over $91,000 from Collier Construction.  In explaining the huge discrepancy, Rau says recent spikes in concrete and construction costs caused the project to be much more expensive than he expected.  The Brenham Community Development Corporation (BCDC) is funding the new parking lot from their portion of sales tax receipts.

Also during Thursday’s meeting the City Council will consider adding stop signs on South Saeger Street at its intersection with Old Mill Creek Road.  This would make the intersection, where a new 464-bed student housing facility is being built, a 4-way stop.  Blinn College has issued a letter in support of adding the stop signs on South Saeger Street.

Another item on the agenda deals moving some of the City’s critical facilities and lift stations out of areas that tend to flood.  The Council will consider amending the City’s Hazard Mitigation Plan to propose spending $1.2 million to elevate or relocate those facilities that are near special flood hazard or flood prone areas.

A pair of organizations are requesting noise variances for music to be played during upcoming Juneteenth celebrations at City parks.  The Washington County Historical Juneteenth Association is planning to have music at Fireman’s Park on Friday, June 15th from 7:00 ‘til 11:00 p.m., and on Saturday, June 16th from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The Brenham Outlaws are requesting a noise variance for their Juneteenth celebration at Hattie Mae Flowers Park on Saturday, June 16th from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Thursday’s regular meeting of the Brenham City Council will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Council chambers on the 2nd floor of City Hall.  Earlier that day, the Council hold a special meeting at 9:00 a.m. in conference room 2-A to begin pre-budget planning for fiscal year 2018-2019.

  1. It is sad to say that the complaints and suggestions given by Wayne Winkelmann, a long time resident on Old Mill Creek Road, will again fall on deaf ears! When will the issues that he has brought forth be considered? It’s sad that a hard working, tax paying citizen has to be concerned about the traffic on his road because the City does not care. Come on City Of Brenham, make it safer for all concerned!!

    1. There are no issues! OMC is a normal width, with a normal speed limit. We can add striping and expand existing lighting, but it’s not like we have a ton of wrecks on OMC. Please, please let the ax get dull.

  2. I hope the city will consider the families in that area before they grant that noise variance. The City normally doesn’t think about the families that have to put up with all that noise.

  3. Constructions costs have gone up dramatically due to the higher wages and benefits that must now be paid by contractors. Since the crackdown on illegals, wages must go up to pay for out of town workers who require better wages. The labor pool in a Brenham for hard manual outdoor labor is extremely small. Just runs up construction costs, making buying your own home impossible for blue collar workers who live here. Be careful what you vote for. Oh, well, won’t bother the wealthy old guard and out of towners.

  4. While making this intersection a four way stop please consider widding and adding extra turn lanes at the west side of Saeger and Old Mill Creek Rd. Emergency Vehicles and larger trucks and trailers cannot safety make the turn onto Old Mill Creek Rd.
