CITY COUNCIL TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK AT ANIMAL SHELTER BIDS

Negotiations are ongoing this week between the City of Brenham and the low bidder for a new Pet Adoption and Animal Care Facility.  And if enough can be cut from the bid or reworked to fit within the $2 million budget, the Brenham City Council could award a contract at this Thursday’s meeting.

When four bids for construction of a new Brenham animal shelter were opened two weeks ago, they came in considerably over budget.  Brenham City Manager Terry Roberts says the City continues to negotiate with the low bidder, and the City Council will either award a contract or reject the bids at Thursday afternoon’s meeting.

During executive session Thursday, Councilmembers are expected to discuss the appointment of a Presiding Judge and City Prosecutor for the Brenham Municipal Court for the unexpired term ending December 16, 2016.  This person will replace Julian Wiesler, who died unexpectedly on January 30th.  Also during executive session, an amendment to the wholesale power agreement with the Lower Colorado River Authority will be discussed.

Also on the agenda is acceptance of a $25,000 donation to the Brenham Police Department, and a $5000 grant for new computer equipment for the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library.  Stop sign placement at various intersections within the Woodbridge Subdivision near Brenham Elementary School will be discussed and acted upon.  A candidate will be nominated for election to the Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors to fill an unexpired term.  The Council will hear a request for a noise variance from the Brenham Maifest Association for the 2015 Royalty Run to be held on Sunday, May 3rd.  Councilmembers are expected to adopt the Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Master Plan for 2015 through 2025.  And they will hold another work session to discuss City and non-City sponsored special events in downtown and other areas of the City.

Prior to the regular agenda, the Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed creation of a reinvestment zone for tax phase-in incentive on 34 acres of land owned by Valmont Coatings, Inc.  Following the hearing, the Council will discuss and possibly adopt an ordinance creating the reinvestment zone at the property on Industrial Boulevard, designating it as qualifying for tax phase-in.

The Executive Director of the Texas Downtown Association will be on hand to present the 2014 “Downtowner of the Year Award” to Brenham’s Sharon Brass, for her work with Main Street Brenham.  There will also be a presentation for Brenham’s Blue Bell Aquatic Center by the Texas Public Pool Council.

The Brenham City Council will meeting at 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon on the 2nd floor of the City Hall at 200 West Vulcan Street.
