CITY OF BELLVILLE CONSIDERING A RAILROAD ‘QUIET ZONE’ FOR THE CITY

The Bellville Economic Development Corporation has agreed to accept a proposal from Quiet Zone Technologies, which would create a train quiet zone for Bellville.

The cost of the proposal will be $8,450, and if the BEDC board opts to see a way side horn demonstration in Bellville, it will add an additional cost of $2,300, but the board has not yet voted on that option.

A quiet zone would eliminate the need for the horns as trains approach road crossings in town by adding either a wayside horn, double railroad crossing arms, or the addition of curbing or channeling devices between vehicle traffic lanes that keep vehicles from driving around a crossing arm.

Under the proposal, Quiet Zone Technologies will work with the railroad to determine what would be best for each street crossing in Bellville.

The Bellville Chamber of Commerce is in favor of the quiet zone, and will help the BEDC find out from the community if there is a consensus to move forward with the project.

The City of Brenham instituted a railroad quiet zone in October of 2011.
