CITY OF BRENHAM PROVIDES UPDATE ON CLOSURE OF PARK AMENITIES, FACILITIES

Several of the City of Brenham’s park facilities remain closed in light of ongoing health concerns pertaining to COVID-19.

In a release this (Tuesday) morning, city officials say playgrounds, fitness equipment, basketball and volleyball courts, park facility rentals, and the Flying Horses Carousel remain closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, the city’s parks, trails and open spaces, along with their restrooms, tennis and pickleball courts, sports fields, and skate park are currently open.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department said it remains proactive and cautious in its adjustments to “provide a safe environment” for families and staff, as it continues to follow guidance and safety protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), orders from Governor Greg Abbott, and advice from local public health and safety officials.

The city also reminds the public to take precautions to keep themselves and their families safe, such as exercising physical distancing with all activities, washing their hands or using hand sanitizer after touching high-touch surfaces, and following CDC guidelines.

  1. Pickleball players do not “brush up against each other.” Pickleball is a non contact sport. And why is it that the people who post their comments do not have the gall to post your name? Why not stand behind your post and comments???Geeez…Lonesome dove….why don’t you come out and join us. You may enjoy the game!
I think the parks, playgrounds , and libraries should open as well. It is your choice to go or not to go.

  2. I’m taking my children to the park! It’s been 3 months and everyone else is going out and exposing themselves to pathogens. My children shouldn’t punished while you people can go to bars and get your hair done. I’m done with these restrictions. Done!

  3. I drive by the playground off Lounge road on my way home from work, I see kids playing on the equipment almost every day. I thought it had reopened.

  4. The pool should be closed as well. Is it not a public recreation area? What makes it any different COVID-19 can also be there.

  5. This is ridiculous. Our city leaders just like to throw their weight around and see how they can control everyone. We pay taxes for those parks. We pay their salary with our tax dollars. How about we refuse to open our wallets to pay our tax dollars in the name of safety? The city leaders need to start listening to us and quit being bullies. Our children and grand children deserve to go visit and play at what we all pay for. City leaders are violating our civil rights and I for one an sick and tired of this.

  6. The fact that the city leadership, Fischer, Tate, an Mr. Dana have allowed our library, playgrounds, and other city public use facilities, whether rental or not, to STILL BE CLOSED, is disgraceful.
The “threat” of the Corona virus has passed.
Yes, it has passed for 99.9% of people in this county and state.
    Open it up.
If there is a budget shortage due to the shut down and bad management, then say that.
    Ask for donations and volunteers.
You will get plenty of each.
The library’s in Bryan and College Station are open.
The amazing Rosenberg Library in Galveston open.
All of those libraries are located in counties that have had many more cases of Covid-19 than Washington County.
The children and adults of Washington County need them open NOW.
Stop hiding behind the Governor’s orders or the “safety of everyone”.
    It is a not true,
and a poor excuse to true leadership in tough times.
They should be ashamed of themselves.

Open up the parks and rental facilities to paying customers.
There is a thing called personal responsibility.

When Fischer says” we can’t disinfect all of the books in the library”, get real.
It is not a problem at all.
No one person has gotten sick and died from surface contact, look it up.
I hope ALL of the citizens of Washington County vote out all of these terrible “leaders” as soon as possible.

    1. Two pickle ball players on each side if the court stand next to each other and both sweat and brush up against each other to chase about for the ball. Two basketball players stand near each other and swear and brush up against each other to chase the ball. So why are the city of Brenham’s pickle ball courts reopened quickly but NOT basketball courts?

Library books are made of paper and so is cash. Why are businesses and banks allowed to distribute paper cash dollars but the Brenham library is concerned about disinfecting each paper book? The city contractor is happy to accept my paper check if I pay my exorbitant new recycling or garbage fee in person.

The CDC and medical updates have recently said that the COVID-19 virus survives only a fe seconds in sunlight, and may not survive on hard surfaces at all. Playgrounds in Brenham parks are hard surfaces in the sunlight. Why do they remain shut down?

Protesters with political agendas are allowed to march down the streets of Washington County, as is their right- but those wishing to celebrate the founding of our nation are denied a parade to do so on the Fourth of July. At the same time the nearby Burton Cotton Gin Festival is happy, and the Fourth of July Fayette County parade in Round Top is still occurring.

Can someone please explain this to me? I believe in “local control” but not when that means micromanaging control of our lives.

    2. I absolutely agree with you JD and appreciate you writing it out for everyone. I wasn’t even aware that libraries in surrounding counties are all open and they are way bigger than we are! I have been upset about the way things are handled here in Brenham as well. It makes sense that the city is broke and they are now trying to save money by utilizing closures and limiting staff so they don’t have to maintain the properties or pay them. I saw an article recently I believe on KWHI that said they were in trouble financially. This adds a very heavy layer to all that’s going on and clearly covid is now being used as an excuse for a great number of things. The people here are no fools but somehow we didn’t seem to elect people to run our city who share the same views of freedom and democracy. The city facilities like the playgrounds where children play and parents talk, the parades for the 4th of July, the ability to freely move as one wishes without being watched, freedom of speech and assembly whether in protest or in church are all what makes being American special. It’s as if the people in charge are trying to erase what makes Americans well… Americans. If they take away our parades, our ability to worship, and gather among friends, family and neighbors they erase what makes our country the best country in the world. The city has allowed protests now for several days. That is assembling and gathering and you can’t say that is fine but the general public here has to listen to your orders that no longer have any standing. The update literally says facilities will remain closed until further notice which implies quit asking because we are in charge and do what we want not what’s best for the community.

  7. Are you serious? Thousands of folks in hospitals( NOT for Covid 19), assisting living, nursing homes, doctors, nurses, and hospital workers have lost their lives! Do you have parents that are still alive? Be thankful if they are! Do you not care about your fellow human being? Our children will hopefully survive this, many others will not. Be kind and selfless.

  8. Can we all go to the playground with open brenham signs and call it a protest so our children can play again? They are the biggest victims in all of this.

      1. You make no sense.
One does not relate to the other.
We all take a chance every day we wake up and live our life.
        Nothing is ever guaranteed.
If I choose to go outside with my kids and play with them at the playground, or use the library facilities, I am now causing people to die?
The last time I checked this is Washington County, Texas, the birthplace of Texas, not
        Washington DC, not Washington State.
        Not California or Michigan.
We are of a smarter, tougher kind of American.
        Open it up.
        Open it all up.
If you think the sky is falling, then stay inside.

      2. Your statements are false and misleading.
        Most everyone will be fine.
        Especially children.
The main victims of this are extremely elderly in nursing homes or hospice.
        Are my parents still alive?
One died at 51 of bad life choices, and the other is 72, not scared of life, doing just fine.
If you, or anyone else is that worried, then please stay home.
No one is forcing you to go outside of your domicile.
        Carpe Diem, Madam.

    2. This is a GREAT IDEA! Please organize it and I will be there- sign in hand, ready to support out rights as citizens to use the parks, playgrounds and libraries that we WORKING taxpayers fund. Let people decide for themselves. If you are old and/or otherwise compromised then please protect yourself by staying home.
