COLLEGE STATION STUDENT WINS REGION SPELLING BEE

  

A College Station 7th grader is heading to the Houston Spelling Bee after taking the top prize at Saturday’s Zone IX Region Bee at Krause Elementary School in Brenham.

Shiva Saravanan correctly spelled the word “dermal” in round 23, to take the top prize.

Second place went to Sammy Shankar, a 2nd grade student at Pebble Creek Elementary in College Station.  Demi Hu, a 5th grader from Cypress Grove Intermediate School in College Station was 3rd.

The top three finishers in the Brenham Spelling Bee competed in the Region Bee.  Anna Longhofer, a 7th grader at Brenham Junior High advanced to the 15th round;  Tanner David a 5th grade student at St. Paul’s Christian Day School made it to round 8; and Alton Elementary 4th grader Micah Andrejczak made it to round-3.

Saravanan is now on his way to the Houston PBS Bee in March. 

The winner in Houston advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in May.
