The Burton School Board made history earlier this week when they elected their first African-American board president.

Fellow board members elected long-time trustee Demetrius Colvin as their new president.

Colvin is a graduate of Burton High School and was a key supporter of the bonds that have led to new construction and renovations in the district.

Also elected to officers’ positions are Misti Lucherk, vice-president; and Ronnie Hohlt, board secretary.

  1. Congratulations on your continued success! Always knew you would become a historical figure in the community because you’ve always cared about the little people in and around your community!! You’re always asking what can I do to make a change!!!!

  2. Such a great man for so many reasons. This is definitely the right man for the job.

  3. I think it is great Mr. Colvin was elected, but this headline is ridiculous, race or gender should not be news for this. People are people, race and gender have nothing to do with qualification. The headline should read “Colvin elected school board president”.

    1. I beg to differ with you. It is news….just like it’s news that Blinn just hired their first female President. It was big news when the first African American was elected as President of the United States. I know the Burton School Board doesn’t compare to that….but it is news in our small community.

      1. I agree with Washinton. Racism continues to live as long as we focus on race. A person’s accomplishments are lessened when the focus becomes on race and not what he has done. We only talk about ‘firsts’ like this when it’s an African-American. It’s as if our society, or maybe it’s just the media, expects less of them and is surprised when a person of color achieves a high position.

      2. I agree with you, Mr. Whitehead. It’s not about racism, its about race equality and gender equality in the Blinn case. It’s nice to see, especially in our small towns, people of all races and gender getting elected to leadership positions.

      3. I agree Mr. Whitehead. But it is my wish, that one day , in this city, state and country that it will no longer be necessary to make note of ones race in recognition of achievement. In more educated population areas of this country, this is already the case to some degree and something we can all aspire to achieving in our own hearts and minds.

      4. But WHY is it news? I would venture to say the average reader/listener doesn’t care but the news media still does. And I’m fairly certain we can tell by looking at their pictures that they are white, black, pink, or purple, male or female for those who DO consider it news. I’m tired of separating us by the color of our skin or X and Y chromosomes. How about the headline be Former Panther Elected School Board Prez?
