COMMISSIONERS APPROVE PURCHASE OF BUS FOR HEALTHY LIVING

Washington County Commissioners approved the purchase of a 14 passenger bus for the Healthy Living Association at their meeting today (Tuesday).  The new bus will be purchased with donated funds and with the trade in value of the old van.  The new bus has a lower entry height which is important the older passengers and it does not require a commercial driver’s license.

In other action, commissioners heard a number of monthly reports from county departments.  In his monthly report, Sheriff Otto Hanak said that burglaries are up in the county.  He also stated that assaults were also up with the coming holiday season.  Hanak noted that the number of miles traveled by his deputies is also up as they patrol the county.  Commissioners discussed the increasing number of calls for EMS personnel to respond to the jail.  Captain of the Jail Jerry Green said they were no closer to hiring a jail nurse and that he was not going to ask jailers to make medical decisions.  Commissioners also brought up the Sandra Bland Act and the medical requirements it will bring.  Green said they were working on a plan to meet the requirements and will bring it to the commissioners when completed.

Commissioners also approved a number of routine items on the agenda.  Among them were:

  • Accepting the Washington County Appraisal District financial audit
  • Granting retiring Sheriff’s Deputy Ann Mode permission to purchase her duty issued firearm
  • Renewal of the Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s bond for Steve Westbrook
  • Approval of the interlocal agreements with Blinn College and the City of Burton for Public Safety Computer Hardware and Software
  • Re-Adopting the Guidelines and Criteria for granting Tax Phase-Ins
  • Approval of the Stipend Program for Washington County 911
  • Approval of Rutledge Crain and Company to provide auditing services to the county

Commissioners also set the time for their final meeting of 2017.  The court will meet at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 27th.  The only item expected that day is state required approval of the counties payroll.
