COMMUNITY READ RECEPTION

You have a chance to meet the author of a novel that many of us in Washington County have been reading for the past  several months. Ann Weisgarber, the author of ‘The Personal History of Rachel Dupree’ the book for the 5th annual  Community Read of Washington County.  Ms. Weisgarber will be at a reception and presentation of that book tonight (Tuesday) at six at the Unity Theater.

The Community Read is an event sponsored by Lifetime Learning in hopes that everyone in the County will all read the same book.

Weisgarber’s book focuses on a piece of history that hasn’t been explored much in fiction: The experiences of African-Americans homesteading on the frontier in the early 1900s.

.  The Houston based writer will be autographing her book and the novel will be brought to life by actors reading portions of the book in character.

Lynn Nolte is chairing this year’s Community Read. She says it is significant that Judge Eddie and Margaret Harrison are the Honorary Co-Chairs of the event.  Judge Harrison is a local expert on the ‘Buffalo Soldiers’ and one of the major characters in the novel is a Buffalo Soldier.  Nolte says that while the characters may seem very different from us, they have many similarities to us in our time.

Copies of “The Personal History of Rachel Dupree” are available at the Nancy Carol Roberts Library, the Book Nook, HEB and will be for sale at the Unity Theater reception.

Carole Muegge of Lifetime Learning says this novel may well be the most read book in the Community Read’s history.

The Community Read of Washington County is sponsored by Lifetime Learning, the Brenham Banner Press, Unity Theater, KWHI-KTEX, HEB, The Book Nook, the Nancy Carol Roberts Library, Bank of Brenham, Citizen’s State Bank, Washington County Chamber of Commerce, Blinn College, and the Brenham ISD.
