Corbin Brooks placed third in the Zone 9 Regional Spelling Bee held virtually earlier this month.  Brooks will now move on as the alternate for the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee on Tuesday, March 9th, representing Zone 9 if the champion or runner-up are unable to participate.

The champion at the Zone 9 Regional Bee was Debkonya Banerjee, a 7th grader at A&M Consolidated Middle School.  The second-place finisher was Samprokshana Karthikeyan, an 8th grader at College Station Middle School.

Brooks was one of seven Washington County students competing in the Zone 9 Regional Bee, which included contestants from Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison and Robertson counties.  He was also the winner of the 2019 and 2020 county spelling bees.

The Houston Spelling Bee will be held through the Scripps National Spelling Bee online testing platform, the same method used for the Zone 9 Regional Bee.  During the school day on March 9th, participants will type their spellings in an online test proctored by their campus spelling bee coordinator.

The speller with the highest overall score will move on to the national level of competition.  After a series of virtual preliminaries, quarterfinals and semifinals, 10-12 finalists will meet in person for the Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals, to be held July 8th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
