COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS ASKING PUBLIC TO LOOK OUT FOR SUSPICIOUS ROADSIDE FIRES

The Washington County Firefighter’s Association, representing all the Volunteer Fire Departments in Washington County, is asking the public to be on the lookout for suspicious roadside activity in the county.

The vice-president of the association, Doug Zweiner, says that  in the last five days there have been 14 grass fires, most of which started in the road ditch and spread onto adjacent property.  Even with the very dry conditions which might explain the ease of ignition of dry roadside grass, several fires will start in close proximity to each other and the same pattern repeats itself in different parts of the county.

The Sheriff’s Department, Brenham Police Department, Burton Police Department and the City of Brenham Fire Marshall’s Office are aware of the suspicious fires and are working with the Association to help investigate these occurrences and will have deputies and patrol officers watching for suspicious activity.

“The best eyes and ears we have are our citizens, no one knows their neighbors and neighborhoods better than the people who live there”.

If you see suspicious activity on the roadside, please call the NON-emergency number to Dispatch at 979-337-7272, try to give information like vehicle type, color, license plate, driver description and what did they appear to be doing, especially if there is a fire nearby.
