COUNTY, STATE CANDIDATES TAKE PART IN POLITICAL FORUM

Relationships with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, property taxes, and funding for local departments were some of the topics addressed at Wednesday night’s KWHI Candidate’s Forum at Brenham National Bank.

A modest crowd showed up to hear from three candidates, for the two locally contested races in November 6th’s general election.  Each of the Precinct Two Commissioner candidates, along with a candidate for State Representative of District 13, answered questions from the public.

Republican Ben Leman, who is currently serving as District 13 State Representative, could not attend the forum because of previously scheduled business in Austin.  His opening statement was read by Washington County Republican Party Chairman Sandra Kindt.

Democrat Cecil Webster, running for State Representative District 13, stated that, if he were in Leman’s situation, he would have made it a point to attend the forum.  Webster claimed that the committees Leman is a part of were not scheduled to meet Wednesday night, and he noted that legislature doesn’t officially meet until January.

Republican Candice Bullock, running for Washington County Commissioner of Precinct 2, said her business acumen and ability to work with others made her a qualified candidate.

Democrat Ira Joe Newsome, also running for Precinct 2 Commissioner, cited his experience working at Exxon as one of his selling points.

Below is each present candidate's opening statement.  Early voting begins October 22nd, with Election Day on November 6th.
