CUBETTES ADVANCE WITH 12-POINT WIN

The Brenham Cubettes’ twin posts of Teaira McCowan and Alencia Woodberry combined for 47 of their team’s 71 points, as Brenham defeated Summer Creek, 71-59 in the Region III/4A playoffs, Friday night at Cy Falls High School.

The Cubettes (29-3) got off to a hot start, taking a 7-1 lead less than two minutes into the game.

But their momentum was slowed for about 20 minutes when an automatic timer went off killing the lights inside the gymnasium.

Once the lights came back to full power, the Cubettes continued to hammer the Lady Bulldogs (22-7) inside.  Woodberry scored 11 points and McCowan six as Brenham took a 22-13 lead after the first quarter.

But, a late surge in the second quarter led Summer Creek right back to even by the half, 36-36.  Jayla Calhound rained down three long jump shots in the final 90 seconds helping tie up the game.

An 8-0 surge mid-way through the third-quarter gave the Cubettes a 9-point lead that they maintained into the fourth quarter.

McCowan and Woodberry once-again dominated the inside while Angel Darcus hit three big baskets as the Cubettes pulled away late for a 12-point win.

McCowan led all scorers with 27 points, 24 rebounds and five blocked shots.  Woodberry had 20 points and Darcus added 15.

Calhound led Summer Creek with 21 points, while Sugar Young added 14 and Crocked scored 13.

The Cubettes will next face defending State Champion Georgetown in the Region Quarterfinals, Tuesday night at 6:00 at Hearne High School.
