CUBETTES FALL IN EXTRA INNINGS
For the second straight game, the Brenham Cubettes softball team suffered a tough loss at home.
Stratford scored twice in extra innings to defeat the Cubettes (6-6/1-2), 3-1 in eight innings.
A two-out single by Alex Cole drove home the winning runs in the eighth. The Lady Spartans opened the inning with a single by Leslie Merchan and an error on Sam Englund’s sacrifice bunt. After a sacrifice and strikeout, Cole delivered the hit that drove home the game-winners.
Brenham jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and no one on base, Reagan Kwiatkowski singled, followed by Autumn Pauler’s rbi-double off the centerfield fence.
Lady Spartan pitcher Jennifer Brann held the Cubettes scoreless on just three more hits the rest of the way.
Stratford (1-2, district) evened the score in the top of the fifth when Elizabeth Brann scored on an infield grounder. Brann had led off the inning with a bloop double.
The Cubettes threatened to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Pauler ripped her second double of the night but was left stranded at second base.
In the sixth, Brenham squandered a golden opportunity. After Kelly Jurden and Colleen Bentke led off the inning with back-to-back singles, a bunt advanced the two into scoring position with one out. However, back-to-back strikeouts from Brann left the two stranded on base.
Bentke (4-4) suffered her second-straight tough luck loss, surrendering two earned runs on just three hits, while striking out five and not walking a batter.
The Cubettes managed just five hits, led by Pauler’s two doubles. Brann struck out nine Cubettes.
Brenham will host Columbus Friday night in non-district tilt at 5:30.
District play will resume Tuesday night when the Cubettes host Magnolia at 6:45.
