CUBETTES’ SEASON ENDS IN SHOOTOUT HEARTBREAK
The Brenham Cubettes were just three minutes from a trip to the Region III/5A Final Four, when the sixth-ranked Magnolia Lady Bulldogs’ Brooke Bowie salvaged her team’s season, and a heart-breaking end for the Cubettes.
Bowie’s goal tied up the game with 2:36 left in regulation, which eventually led to Magnolia (19-6) taking the win in a shootout, 4-3.
After falling behind on a 35-yard booming goal by Magnolia’s Sara Johnson, the Cubettes (19-7) rallied to take the lead.
Kourtney Hajek tied the game with her third goal in three playoff games, coming off a corner kick by Anna Brans.
Thirteen minutes later, Brans fed Angelica Darcus who sped down field and fired a shot into the goal, giving Brenham a 2-1 lead.
Magnolia’s Sydney Renfroe tied the game with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the half.
The Cubettes took a one-goal lead in the game’s 51st minute when Destiny Morgan found Madison Tomachefsky, who found the back of the goal for her team-leading 12th goal of the season.
After Bowie’s tying goal, Cubette keeper Cassie Musser salvaged overtime with a leaping save on a last-second blast by Johnson that was headed into the upper right corner.
Neither team scored in overtime, leading to the shootout.
Magnolia keeper Sarah Hubble blocked the Cubettes’ first two shots, while Bowie and Johnson scored for the Lady Bulldogs.
The tables turned around as Mattie Musser and Ashley Fite scored for the Cubettes while Cassie Musser turned away Magnolia’s fourth shot, tying the shootout at 2-2.
On the fifth and final shot, Brooke Mallory score in the upper right corner, giving the Lady Bulldogs the edge.
Hubble blocked the Cubettes’ final try by senior Maria Aguado, ending the shootout and sending the Lady Bulldogs onto the Region Tourney at Turner Stadium in Humble.
Magnolia will face Ridge Point, Friday afternoon at 4:00, while College Station will take on Port Neches-Groves in the second semifinal at 6:00. The Championship game is set for Saturday at 1:00.
