For the 34th straight year, the Brenham Cubs are headed to the baseball playoffs.
The Cubs (18-10/8-5) clinched a post-season berth, with an 8-1 win over Huntsville, Tuesday night – coupled with Magnolia’s 10-0 win over Willis (12-10/6-7).
The Cubs trailed, 1-0 in the third inning, when Chris Kubeczka and John Dickschat led off with back-to-back singles. Pierce Weiss then gave the Cubs a 3-1 lead, when he launched a three-run blast to left field.
Brenham added two more runs in the inning, thanks to a pair of walks and two errors, increasing their lead to 5-1.
Meanwhile, Eric Wellmann (3-4), who gave up a run on three hits in the first two innings, settled down and shut out the Hornets the rest of the way.
Wellmann would finish with six strikeouts and scattered seven hits, but did not issue a walk.
The Cubs added to their lead in the fifth, when Weiss’ sacrifice fly scored Kubeczka. They added two more runs in the sixth for the 8-1 win.
The Cubs will close out the regular season Friday at Magnolia.
Brenham remains tied with Tomball Memorial with identical 8-5 district marks. If the two remain tied after Friday’s games, Cubs Coach Lanny Williams says they will have a playoff game, Saturday to determine the seedings.
