CUBS GET FIRST WIN OF 2014 IN 32-12 VICTORY

For about six minutes at the end of the first half, the Brenham Cubs showed the explosiveness that led the 2013 team to the State Championship game.

The Cubs (1-2) erupted for 29 unanswered points in the final 5:38 of the second quarter to take a 32-12 victory over Houston Westside, in a game ended at half time due to excessive lightening in the area.

With the Wolves leading 12-3, Ernest Patterson got the Cubs into the endzone with a 63-yard touchdown sprint.

On the next possession, Westside’s punter then had to go to his knee to field a bad snap, giving the Cubs excellent field possession at the Wolves’ 35-yard line.  After a 19-yard pass to Jaquay Cross set up the Cubs inside the 10, Patterson finished the drive off with a four-yard run.

A pass from Caleb Hill to Trumaine Sweed for the two-point conversion gave the Cubs an 18-12 lead…their first lead of the season.

On the next play from scrimmage, Wolves’ quarterback Elia Makule fumbled the ball, which was picked up by Jordan Graves who raced 54 yards for the touchdown.

The Cubs’ defense forced another Westside turnover on the next offensive play, stripping the ball from running back Loren Easley, which was recovered by Al’Fondrick Bennett. 

On the next play, Hill hit tight end Shawn Weiss for 22 yards.  Hill then went 7 yards on a quarterback bootleg to up the score to 32-12, heading into the locker room.

After a third delay for lightening, the game was called and the Cubs got their first win of the season.

Brenham picked up 255 total yards in offense with 188 yards coming on the ground.  Ernest Patterson led the Cubs with 166 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns.  Patterson’s night gives him 3,155 yards rushing for his career, which places him fifth on the Cubs’ career rushing list, just three yards behind Matt Murski in fourth and 26 yards behind Mathus Gill, who’s third.  Patterson is also within striking distance of Donyell Jones, who’s second at 3,225 yards and Roosevelt Leaks all-time record 3,691 yards.

Quarterback Caleb Hill completed six of nine passes for 82 yards, pushing his career total to 2987 yards—third on the all-time list behind Jarrett Lee (6,182) and Ty Schlottmann (4,958).

The Cubs will have a bye Friday night at they get ready for their District 19/5A opener Friday the 26th at Tomball Memorial.
