CUBS SURVIVE!

The Brenham Cubs survived a furious fourth-quarter rally to defeat the upset-minded Georgetown Eastview Patriots, 35-30 in the Bi-District round of the Region III/4A, Division II playoff, Friday night in Waco.

The Cubs (10-1) built up a 35-10 lead by the end of the third quarter, but the Patriots scored 20-straight 4th quarter points, forcing the Cubs to recover an onside kick with 1:36 left to preserve the victory.

The Cubs broke out to the early lead as Earnest Patterson broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run on the Cubs’ first play from scrimmage.

The Patriots (7-4) evened the game up just before the end of the first quarter when their standout running back Cornelio Garcia dove in to the end zone from a yard out.

On the very next drive the Cubs took little time moving the ball downfield, as quarterback Caleb Hill hit Coutland Sutton for an 11-yard game and then James Homan for a 25-yard completion.  That set up a 10-yard scoring pass to Tre’Vonte Johnson.

The Cubs’ lead was cut to 14-10 less than two-minutes later when East View kicker Tre Honshtein boomed a 52-yard field goal.

The Cubs struck for two quick touchdowns just before the half.  Patterson’s 44-yard run set up Jordan Graves’ 2-yard touchdown run.

Less than a minute-and-a-half later, Patterson went on another long scoring run—this time for 61 yards, giving the Cubs a 28-10 half-time lead.

Brenham would increase that lead when Patterson capped a 95-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown burst up the middle.

It was the Patriots’ special teams that ignited their fouth-quarter rally when they blocked a Collin Kolkhorst punt in the end zone and Adrian Contreras recovered it in the end zone.

Garcia would cut further into the Cubs’ lead with a 47-yard touchdown run with 6:23 remaining, making the score, 35-24.

On the next drive, the Cubs took over four minutes off the clock, but once they punted the ball back to the Patriots, it took them just three plays to go 78 yards for the score—a 17-yard run by Garcia, with 1:36 left in the game.

After Brenham thwarted a two-point conversion by East View, the Cubs’ lead was cut to five.

Courtland Sutton, playing his first game since suffering a hip injury four weeks ago, recovered the onside kick, allowing the Cubs to run out the clock.

The Cubs put a total of 454 yards offense on the board, with 330 yards of that coming on the legs of Patterson, who scored three times.

Garcia led the Patriots’ offense with 185 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cubs advance to the Area Round of the playoffs, where they will next face Dayton, who defeated Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Saturday.

That Area Playoff game is set for next Saturday at Woodforest Bank Stadium in Conroe, Saturday night at 6:00.  The game can be heard beginning with the pre-game show at 5:15 on KWHI  with Ed Pothul and Kyle Van Hook.
