CUBS WIN REGION TITLE; STATE SEMI’S NEXT!
The Brenham Cubs came out firing and rolled to a 35-6 win over the George Ranch Longhorns, Saturday afternoon at Tully Stadium.
The win gives the Cubs the Region III/4A Division II Championship and a berth in the State Semifinals.
The Cubs scored on each of their first three possessions—all on long bombs by junior quarterback Caleb Hill.
On the team’s first play from scrimmage, Hill hit a streaking James Homan for a 77-yard touchdown.
Just three minutes later, Hill fired a 69-yard scoring pass to Courtland Sutton.
That was followed by a 49-yard touchdown pass to Tre’Vonte Johnson, giving the Cubs a 21-0 lead that would stand up throughout the first half.
The Cubs scored two more times in the second half as Jordan Graves scored on a 2-yard run that followed a fumble recovery by Shea Robbins.
A Malik Wilson interception led to a 15-yard touchdown run by Earnest Patterson on the very next play.
Hill would finish with 10 completions in 18 attempts and three touchdowns. Sutton led all receivers with four catches for 106 yards and a score.
The Cubs’ defense held George Ranch vaunted running game to 79 yards on 33 carries. The Longhorns had averaged 327 yards per game entering the contest.
The Cubs will now face Port Lavaca-Calhoun in the State Semifinals. The Sandcrabs defeated Alamo Heights, 46-22 in the Region IV title game.
The Cubs and Sandcrabs will meet Saturday afternoon at Reliant Stadium. Kickoff is tentatively set for a noon kickoff. The game can be heard on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
