DCTF 2021 EXPECTS MORE SUCCESS FOR THE CUBS

Writers with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine expect more success for the Brenham Cubs football team in 2021.

According to DCTF staff, the Cubs should continue their current run of 17 consecutive seasons in the playoffs.

The 2021 Cubs are projected to battle defending district champ Leander Rouse and Georgetown Eastview for the 13/5A DII title.  The Cubs were second in district in 2020, falling in the fog-marred opening round of the playoffs.

The preseason Defensive Player of the Year is projected to be Cubs senior defensive back and fourth-year starter Eric Hemphill.

In addition to Hemphill, the Cubs return nine starters on defense.  Among the key returnees: DB, Kaden Watts; DB, Adan Villatoro; DE, Blake Jones; LB, Brandon Ward; LB, Jermaine Johnson; DE, Michael Lewis; DT, Kobe Washington; all of whom were named first or second team All-District.

The Cubs also return quarterback Stephen Stackhouse for a second season at the helm of the Cubs’ offense.  He’s joined in the backfield by returning backs Javon Dixon, Amir Johnson and Trenton Gilbert.  One question mark will be offensive line, where the lone returning starter is Jathynn Bennett.

DCTF says the Cubs’ defense will be the key to its 2021 success.  “Brenham’s calling card will be its team speed, especially in the secondary, where Hemphill, Watts and Villatoro can all run step-for-step with any receiver.”

The Cubs open the 2021 season Friday night, August 27 at Magnolia West.  Their 13/5A opener is set for September 24, at home to Leander Glenn.  Cubs Football can be heard throughout the season on KWHI AM-1280, FM 101.7 and www.kwhi.com.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine has been mailed out to subscribers.  It is expected to hit newsstands late June or early July.
