The Cooperative recently recognized 10 people as a sample of Bluebonnet-area residents who have contributed greatly to their community.

Among the ten honorees are: Washington County EMS Director Kevin Deramus and Brenham ISD Special Education Director Leslie Villere.

Deramus was honored for his two year effort to bring a medical helicopter to Washington County.  That helicopter was used for 14 transportations in its first two weeks of service.  By mid-May, the department had transported a total of 140 COVID-19 patients, utilizing six ambulances, six SUV’s and 50 paramedics.

According to Bluebonnet, prior to the arrival of the helicopter, Deramus spearheaded a quest for protective equipment for his staff, including gloves, gowns, goggles and masks.

Leslie Villere
(Brenham ISD)

Villere was recognized by the Cooperative for modifying virtual lessons for impaired students in the Brenham district.

Villere was cited for ‘creatively thinking of ways to teach more than 700 special education students in the homes at a time when teachers were at home, too.”  Local teachers packed crayons, craft projects and books into envelopes and mailed them to their students.

Villere has led the way for special education teachers and staff to, “call, video chat or text parents and caregivers” helping them with academic activities provided for students.  She recognized her staff and personnel who have “gone above and beyond to ensure the kids are safe and happy and making academic progress.”
