The Brenham City Council today accepted a 750 thousand dollar donation from Robbie Gail Charette in memory of her late husband Michael Mansfield Owsley.  The funds will be used to construct an extension of Fireman’s Park between the park and the remodeled Nancy Carol Roberts Library.  The park extension will include a playground with a Texas History theme to be named the Michael Mansfield Owsley Memorial Playground.  Charette stated that she and her husband moved to Brenham in 2009 after Michael’s health began to deteriorate.  She explains why she made the donation:

The Council also accepted a 20 thousand dollar donation from the Lower Colorado River Authority for the construction of an “Outdoor Reading Room” as part of the library.  The reading area will consist of a patio with built in seating. Brenham Librarian Andria Heiges says that the space will be utilized for a number of activities.

In other action, the Council voted to de-annex a one acre tract of land on the North side of Lauraine Street in Brenham.  The property was never intended to be annexed into Brenham and was never shown on annexation map.  A recent survey reviled that it was accidentally included in a 2005 annexation.

The Council also awarded a bid for the rehabilitation of the Surface Water Treatment Plant.  Only one bid was received for the project, but Public Utilities Manager Lowell Ogle stated that negotiations with the contractor reduced the bid by 22 thousand dollars.  The total amount of the project is expected to be 425 thousand dollars.

After and executive session, the Council voted to extend City Manager Terry Robert’s contract another year and increase his salary by 2.5 percent immediately and another 2.5 percent in April of next year.  Robert’s current salary is $145,860 per year.

The Council also appointed local attorney Russell Noe to the position of City Prosecutor.  He will assume the duties immediately and his term will run until the end of 2016.  The Council set his salary for the Prosecutor position at $1500 per month.

  1. A raise and a contract extension?? Really? I think we need a new city manager to clean up some of the problems that are going on! We need more fire fighters and police on the streets but the City doesn’t have funds for that but yet they can give the city manager a raise-he makes an exorbitant amount of money for such a small town-over five times my salary!! Get some new blood in there-start making the much needed changes!

  2. Thank you Ms. Charette and LCRA for the generous donations! I can’t wait for my kids to enjoy the extended park and library once completed!

  3. Thank you Mrs. Charette for your donation in Memory of your beloved husband. Your gift shall give to so many and shall be a joy for so many families.

  4. As a retiree; thank-you city of Brenham elected officials for being so progressive and growing and retaining management. City government must continue to grow to stay in pace with our federal government that has grown to; especially in the past seven years. Congradulations, Mr. Robrts on another pay raise for yourself. I am sure you are busy managinging the city and with three assistant city managers you all deserve another raise. Bigger is better.
