ERROR IN WASHINGTON CO. SALES TAX RETURN FOR FEBRUARY WILL RESULT IN LOWER PAYMENT IN MARCH
A portion of Washington County’s sales tax rebate in February has been determined by the state comptroller’s office to be in error.
According to Accounts Examiner Donna Bethke, a business in the county reviewed its records and determined that it reported its local tax incorrectly. This inflated the county’s allocation payment in February by over $86,000. February’s rebate for Washington County was reported at $380,176.
County Judge John Durrenberger said, while the name of the business that miscalculated its sales was not revealed, it was likely a large retail outlet that made the error.
The comptroller’s office is in the process of correcting the misreported local sales tax for the appropriate return. As a result, the office will process a credit adjustment and reduce next month’s payment by $86,062.
Bethke said the comptroller’s office will continue to monitor this adjustment.
