Saturday morning, just before 7 a.m., Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 call advising of a hay barn fire on Highway 290 near Deer Haven Road, east of Ledbetter.  The Ledbetter and Carmine Fire Departments, along with a deputy, responded to the scene, where they found several round hay bales on fire in a metal barn.  The bales were removed and extinguished, with minor damage to the barn.  Approximately 26 bales were burnt.

Then just two hours later, another 911 call reported a structure fire on Valenta Road, off FM 609 in the Holstein area.  At the scene, the La Grange Fire Department and a deputy found a structure fully engulfed.  The fire was extinguished, but the structure and a vehicle suffered heat damage.  The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Then Tuesday afternoon, shortly before 2 p.m., an emergency call came in to the Sheriff’s Office reporting hay bales on fire in a barn on Highway 71, near Ellinger.  The Ellinger Fire Department responded to the scene, where it reported several bales were fully engulfed inside a metal barn.

Assistance was requested from the Fayetteville Fire Department, who responded along with a sergeant from the Sheriff’s Office.  Several bales were removed from the barn, while the rest were allowed to burn out.  In addition to barn damage, an estimated 500 bales of hay were lost.  The cause of the fire is believed to be spontaneous combustion of the hay.  There were no reported injuries.
