FEDERAL COURTS REINSTATE TEXAS’ VOTER ID LAW

Texas’ voter ID law was reinstated by a federal appeals court on Tuesday temporarily allowing Texas to require voters to have a form of picture ID in order to cast a vote in November.

The New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said it will allow the law, despite a lower court’s ruling that it might suppress minority voter turnout. The court did not rule on the law’s merits, instead determining that it was too late to change the rule for the November election.

Nineteen states have voter ID laws requiring voters to show identification at the polls. Texas Attorney Greg Abbot predicts that the law will likely be settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.
