In a workshop meeting this (Tuesday) morning, County Commissioners heard a presentation from the Washington County Genealogical Society.  Jan Kelm of the Society informed the commissioners about the Adopt a Cemetery Program.  She said that over 240 cemeteries have been identified in the county and that many of them are located on private land and are forgotten and overgrown with brush.

Many of these plots were never deeded as a cemetery, so the land is sold and the graves are forgotten.  The Adopt a Cemetery Program seeks to identify these small cemeteries and clean them up and repair the headstones.

The Genealogical Society dispayed a number of photographs documenting their work cleaning up and restoring the Fisher Family Cemetery off of FM 390.  County Judge John Brieden noted that the Genealogical Society was not seeking funding from the county, but only recognition.  Jan Kelm said they are seeking volunteers and want to make the public aware of the program.  The Genealogical Society is planning a public meeting on the program on October 9th.  For more information see www.bluebonnetgenealogy.org
