GRAVESIDE SERVICE TUESDAY AT PRAIRIE LEA CEMETERY FOR HOMELESS VETERAN WHO DIED IN BRENHAM

Funeral services for a homeless Vietnam War veteran who recently passed away in Brenham are set for tomorrow (Tuesday) at Prairie Lea Cemetery.

Luther Walter Martin, Jr. will be buried at the cemetery, following a graveside service at 2 p.m. A funeral procession will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Chapel, making its way to the cemetery.  Martin will receive full military honors from the Brenham Honor Guard.

Pastor Jack Faulkner of Greenvine Baptist Church in Burton, who is also a Vietnam veteran and member of the Brenham Honor Guard, will perform the service.

Martin, who served 11 months in Vietnam and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder for most of his life. He died from cancer November 8th in Brenham, where he had been living for the past month.  He was 68 years old.

Washington County Veterans Association President Ben Seeker said donations have come in from across Washington County, including nearly every veterans’ organization, businesses, individuals, and the county itself. He said it has been amazing how the community has supported the effort, and that veterans are extremely grateful.

Seeker said, if donations exceed what is needed, the money will be placed into a special fund in the Washington County Veterans Association account, for if a situation like this would ever happen again.

Anyone interested in donating can give money or make out a check to the Washington County Veterans Association. Donations can be dropped off at Memorial Oaks Chapel, whom funeral arrangements are entrusted to, at 1306 West Main Street in Brenham.
