HEMPSTEAD MAYOR DOES NOT PLAN TO RESIGN AFTER FELONY ARREST

The mayor of Hempstead has said he will not resign, following his felony arrest last week on a charge of Abuse of Official Capacity.

Michael Wolfe
(Texas Rangers)

Michael Shayne Wolfe, serving his seventh term as mayor, made the announcement at Monday night’s Hempstead City Council meeting, which was postponed due to an overflow of people at City Hall.  The meeting was rescheduled to next Monday at the city’s recreation center.

Texas Rangers arrested Wolfe Thursday after several months of investigation, which started after an audit of the city’s finances found inconsistencies in delinquent City of Hempstead utility accounts.

According to an affidavit, Wolfe is accused of removing names from a list of delinquent accounts, including the name of his daughter, when they were supposed to have their utilities shut off for not paying.  The affidavit indicated Wolfe’s name was also removed by a utility clerk.  Wolfe and his daughter were said to have owed the city over $20,000.

Wolfe said he has since paid the outstanding bills.  If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to two years in prison.

  1. It should not be his choice. He should automatically be removed! These are the issues in today’s world. Drain the swamp, stop the corruption, and get someone that will respect their citizens.

  2. This is absolutely unbelievable. The very fact that he paid the past due bills in my opinion is an indication of guilt. Can you imagine what would happen to anyone else who went many months without paying their city utility bills? Our services would have been cut off and we would have been turned over for collections. This is the very essence of “the swamp” where politicians abuse their power. If you happen to look the City of Hempstead website, this man proclaims “I am Michael S. Wolfe, Sr., the Mayor of Hempstead, Texas. I graduated from Hempstead High School and furthered my studies at Prairie View A&M University where I received my B.A. in Political Science and a Master’s in Counseling. I am the Pastor at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.” . For goodness sakes, he is a PASTOR and a Counselor, and yet he allegedly has engaged in FELONY THEFT from the citizens that he promised to fight for when asked them to trust him and elect him. The fact that he can’t even show a little remorse by leaving the office that he has abused is sad. Hopefully the city counsel has a way of removing him, but if not, the citizens of Hempstead need to rise up and demand change. This level of corruption and theft if completely unacceptable. If he is found guilty of what he is charged with, I hope he us put away for a long time to teach other politicians that they will be held accountable for their actions.

  3. Mr. Wolfe may not know it but a judge or an AG could remove him as well. He don’t need to be taking advantage of his office like that.
