HUNTSVILLE POLICE ARREST MAN TIED TO VIOLENT KIDNAPPING, ASSAULT

Police in Huntsville have arrested a suspect in connection with a recent robbery and sexual assault of a Sam Houston State University student.

24-year-old Degerrick Deon Sandles has been charged with Aggravated Sexual Robbery, Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Kidnapping, all of which are first degree felonies.  He is also charged with Forgery of a Financial Instrument, a third degree felony, and Possession of Marijuana, a class-B misdemeanor.

According to a release, Huntsville detectives developed Sandles as a suspect through evidence collected at the scene of events, which occurred the evening of February 3rd in the 1300 block of Smither Drive.

Investigators were told by the victim that Sandles forced his way into her off-campus apartment, held her at gunpoint, robbed her of the money she had, and sexually assaulted her.  She was also said to have been forced to drive to several ATMs to withdraw more cash.

Sandles was arrested Tuesday night, after authorities found his vehicle in the 1200 block of Josey Street.  During the arrest, officers found marijuana and counterfeit money.

Sandles is being held at the Walker County Jail, on a bond totaling $604,000.
