JACK APPEL, PROMINENT BRENHAM BUSINESSMAN DIES

  

Arleigh ‘Jack’ Appel died Sunday at his home.

Appel, born in 1925, he began heading  his father’s car business, Appel Dodge Chrysler and Jeep after he came back from service in World War II.  He had begun working there when he began sweeping the floors at the business at the age of seven.  He ran the business for over 45 years before retiring.

Appel graduated from Brenham High School in 1942, enrolled in Blinn College.  Within a few months he was called into military service, serving in the Army Air Corps.  He was a navigator on B-24 during World War II.  He served again during the Korean War, again as a navigator on a bomber aircraft. He became a first lieutenant , participating in 66 combat bombing mission in the western Pacific, including the Phillipines, China, Luzon, Formosa, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Appel was honored in 1990 as the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year.  In 2011 he was named as one of the Distinguished Alumni of the Brenham School District.

He was also a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for over 30 years.  Appel served on the Brenham School Board for six year.

Appel is survived by his sons Jeff, Gregg and Susan, daughters in Law Beth, and many grandchildren.

Services for Appel will be Thursday, October 17th at 10am at the Brenham First Baptist Church.
