One of the true heroes of Aggieland has died.

Texas A&M's first Heisman Trophy winner, John David Crow, died Wednesday night surrounded by his family. He was 79 years old.

Crow was A&M's first Heisman Trophy winner in 1957 when he helped lead the Aggies to an 8-3 record and a berth in the Gator Bowl.

Crow, was coach Bear Bryant's only Heisman Trophy winner.

Crow played 11 years in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.

Crow served as the Director of Athletic Development for seven years before he retired in 2001. Prior to directing A&M's athletic development, Crow had served the four and a half years as athletic director.

Funeral services are pending.
