JP MAY BUDGET WILL PAY FOR COMPUTER REPAIRS AND UPGRADES

The Washington County Commissioners told Precinct Three Justice of the Peace Roy May that he would have to pay out of his court’s budget for a new server and hard drive for the computer system in his office.

Judge May told the County Commissioners at today’s (Tuesday’s) meeting the computer system in his office began failing beyond repair in December and the court was losing documents.  He was also told the hard drive needed to be replaced.  May told the court this was an emergency and sent in a work order before the Commissioners had a chance to approve it.  While the Judge apologized for taking this action, the County Commissioners were concerned that he moved on the action.

Precinct Two County Commissioner Luther Hueske said he wanted to look the work order over before approving it, a sentiment echoed by Precinct One Commissioner Zeb Heckman.  Precinct Three County Commissioner Kirk Hanath said he appreciated the dilemma but the Commissioners Court needed to act according to the law.

Judge May wanted the Justice of the Peace Technology Fund to pay for the new server and hard drive.  May assured the court that his office budget will pay for the server and hard drive and this was simply a question of which fund would pay for the computer needs.

  1. This is another example of our elected officials being penny wise and pound foolish. Of course you immediately replace computer software when it gets to the point of failing and losing documents. But the Commisioners want to consider whether to act. I guess they would be okay with the destruction of records and bogging down of the JP court.

  2. I don’t understand what “law” prohibits the JP from using his Technology Funds for what it is meant to be used for. Can somebody clue me in?
